What is NDA?

The National Defense Academy (NDA) is India’s premier military training institution, preparing cadets for careers in the Army, Navy and Air Force. Located near Pune, Maharashtra, it is the world’s first tri-services academy, renowned for its rigorous training and distinguished alumni. NDA offers a unique blend of academic and military education, which shapes the future leaders of the Indian Armed Forces.

NDA alumni have led and fought in every major conflict since the Academy’s inception, in which the Indian Armed Forces have been called to action. Alumni include 3 Param Vir Chakra recipients and 9 Ashoka Chakra recipients.

NDA aims to provide high quality academic and technical training to its cadets to enable them to provide best service in their respective careers. Plus, pay and benefits start as soon as training begins.

The training in NDA is rigorous. In addition to in-service training for the Army, Navy and Air Force, cadets are also given graduate level education in Arts, Sciences or Computers. Education in NDA is divided into six semesters and the total duration of education is three years. Upon completion of training, cadets are awarded graduation degrees at the NDA graduation parade. What is Naval Academy?

The Naval Academy (NA) is another wing of the Indian Defense where candidates wishing to join the Indian Navy in the technical field are selected. Cadets of 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme will be awarded B.Tech degree (4 years) on successful completion of training at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala.

What is there any relaxation?

There is no relaxation in any eligibility pattern for any candidate, irrespective of caste. Fee relaxation is provided only to SC/ST candidates, sons of JCO, NCO, OR.

Minimum percentage required in class XII.

No, To appear for NDA Exam you need to score passing marks in Class 12th, whereas students with Commerce background are also eligible for NDA Exam, but the entrance exam will comprise all subjects, i.e. Maths, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, GK, etc.

Though there is no minimum marks required to appear for NDA but we recommend that the candidate should score a good percentage of marks in their board exams for a better prospect of Selection.

What is the Selection Process of NDA ?

The candidates can apply for the NDA exam only through Online Mode through UPSC website (www.upsc.gov.in). The National Defence Academy (NDA) Examination is a highly competitive entrance examination in India for individuals aspiring to join the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force as officers. The NDA selection process involves several stages, including a written examination, an interview, and a medical examination. Here is an overview of the NDA selection process:

  1. NDA Written Examination:
    Eligibility: Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria set by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Generally, candidates must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age and have completed 10+2 or its equivalent from a recognized board.
    Application: Candidates need to apply online through the UPSC website during the specified application period.
    Examination: The NDA written examination consists of two papers:
    a. Mathematics
    b. General Ability Test (GAT)
    – This includes sections on English, General     Knowledge, and Current Affairs.
     Each paper is of 2.5 hours duration and is conducted in pen and paper mode.
    The written examination is objective in nature, and candidates are required to mark their answers on an OMR sheet.
  2. NDA SSB Interview:
    Candidates who qualify the written examination are called for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.
    The SSB interview is a comprehensive assessment that takes place over several days and consists of various stages, including:
    a. Screening Test: This includes Intelligence and Picture Perception & Description Test (PPDT).
    b. Psychological Tests: These assess the candidate’s mental abilities and personality traits.
    c. Group Testing Officer Tasks: Candidates are assessed on their ability to work in a group and their leadership skills.
    d. Interview: Personal interview with an interviewing officer.
    The SSB interview aims to evaluate a candidate’s potential to become an officer in the armed forces.
  3. Medical Examination:
    Candidates who clear the SSB interview are subjected to a thorough medical examination.
    The medical examination assesses the candidate’s physical and mental fitness to serve in the armed forces.
    Candidates must meet specific medical standards to be eligible for selection.
  4. Merit List:
    A final merit list is prepared based on the candidate’s performance in the written examination and the SSB interview.
    The final selection is based on the vacancies available and the candidate’s rank in the merit list.
  5. Training:
    Candidates selected for NDA undergo training at the National Defence Academy, which is located in Khadakwasla, Pune.
    The training program is for three years and includes both academic and military training.

What is Application Fees for the NDA Exam

The Exam application fees are Rs.100 for general and OBC category but SC, ST candidates are exempted from Exam Application fee.

What is the mode of Written Exam?

NDA Exam is held in OFFLINE mode at the authorized Examination Centers available in 40 Cities (Approx) across India.

What is the Pattern NDA Exam?

  • NDA written exam is comprised of two tests. The duration of each test is two and a half hours and both are conducted on the same day, consecutively. The examination is set by the UPSC.
  • For each correct answer, you are awarded 5 marks in Maths and 4 Marks in General Science
  • There is a negative marking of 33 marks for every wrong answer in Maths whereas 1.33 marks in General Knowledge
  • Questions are Objective
  • Most of the paper is bilingual i.e Hindi and English
  • The qualifying marks for the written examination are fixed by UPSC as per its discretion and selected students then qualify for written examination
